While the game itself has been receiving a lot of mixed reviews and harsh criticism due to the PC issues, Yoshida has personally played the game and enjoyed it – but understands why fans may feel a bit cheated.
Yoshida blames the game’s lack of success on Hello Games’ pre-release PR strategy. Ultimately, they built up unrealistic expectations. Evidently, overhyping a game can cause the ultimate backfire.
Yoshida spoke to Eurogamer on the Tokyo Game Show and had this to say,
It seems that Yoshida is addressing exactly what fans have been criticizing. Multiplayer mechanics, combat, trading, traveling, are just a fraction of the things that fans felt were clunky and incomplete. It was so frustrating for fans, that many have demanded refunds.
Sony was the publisher and distributor of the console version, perhaps Yoshida feels partly responsible for its lackluster performance. Fans feel cheated that they didn’t get everything that was promised and it’s interesting to see that Yoshida is understanding. Time will tell if No Man’s Sky will improve or if Sony decides to refund players of their money.
